I’m Niko Puumalainen, a portrait photographer based in Kuopio. At the heart of my work is respect for each person’s story and the fleeting moment. Portrait photography for me is a way to make a client’s imagination and personality visible — I aim to capture genuine expressions, small gestures and moods that words don’t always describe. I work calmly and with presence: I meet every client sincerely and respectfully so that the session feels natural and the result feels authentic. Over ten years of independent work in photography and recognition at home have given me confidence in my professional skills. I aim to combine documentary attentiveness, visual sensitivity and clear composition. Nature and the layers of everyday life often serve as inspiration — depending on the client’s wishes I photograph both studio-style moments and nature-oriented portraits. My goal is that the images strengthen the subject’s self-understanding and remain meaningful years from now. My specialisms are portrait and headshot photography — I focus on creating portraits where personality takes centre stage. I also produce corporate portraits and marketing imagery for businesses, using a portrait-led approach to build a professional and trustworthy impression. In company work I concentrate on ensuring each image communicates the brand message and the person’s professionalism in a natural way. My working method is flexible and guided by the client’s needs: before the shoot we listen together to your wishes and goals, the session is kept calm and I guide poses and expressions into relaxed, natural positions when needed. After the shoot I deliver the images digitally and assist with selecting the final images so the outcome serves its intended purpose.
